It was Yvo all along!
At the beginning of 2021, after a year with a Black Widow film that was repeatedly postponed due to the pandemic, Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe finally began. And it was time for the MCU to break new ground, not only because the Infinity Saga had come to its glorious conclusion, but also because the old pattern of Marvel productions was slowly starting to wear out. It was time for a breath of fresh air at Marvel Studios. It was a good thing that Disney now had its own streaming service. For the first time, they launched series about the superheroes from the movies, because Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Cloak & Dagger, just like Agents of SHIELD, were never really part of the true timeline and have now officially been dropped from the continuity of the feature film universe, although Loki of course opened the door to linking them to the main MCU universe. However, the Disney+ series were clearly conceived as part of the main MCU continuity from the start, and so Phase 4 started with WandaVision , Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Loki. The former and the latter in particular also broke new ground stylistically. But since the god of mischief has his own side - the little narcissist wouldn't do it any less - we'll concentrate here on Wanda Maximoff and Vision in their cozy home in Westview.
The title already showed that the series wanted to distance itself from the action-packed material battles of the MCU and challenge the viewers' grey matter a little more. At first glance, it's just the names of the protagonists: Wanda and Vision. But Wanda creates her own reality based on television series and even broadcasts it from the Hex, where SWORD employees can watch it. So instead of television, it's WandaVision . Each episode of the series and each section of Wanda's reality covers a different era of American television and a different sitcom style up to the two final episodes.
The reason for this is that Wanda has imagined a perfect family life since her childhood in Sokovia and now wants to make this a reality with a self-created version of Vision and later even two sons, so as not to have to face her grief over the loss of Vision in Infinity War. The series is therefore not only a small experiment and a kind of test run for a new direction for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but also a complex character study and a story of grief and loss. And as much as we mourned Nat and Tony, there was little room for this in the big blockbusters. The small screen offered a little more space for the quieter tones.
Another big plus was the mystery factor of WandaVision . It's fair to say that since Lost, there haven't been so many nerds flooding the internet week after week with theories and analyzing every little detail to pieces. The geeks were spot on with some things. It wasn't difficult to guess that Agnes is Agatha Harkness. A lot of the things that Marvel fans had interpreted into it unfortunately turned out to be just hot air. No multiverse with the X-men, just a penis joke. We were so excited about Evan Peters and thought that Disney was building a bridge to the newly acquired X-men. For those who don't know: In the comics, Wanda and Pietro, or Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, are the children of none other than Magneto himself. Many had hoped for his appearance at the end of the series. No Magneto. And yes, no Mephisto either, who we suspected was around every corner. Everyone we thought was Mephisto at one point...even Sparky. Paul Bettany linked us all. The "actor he always wanted to work with" was himself.
Despite all the innovation, WandaVision ended more conventionally than many had hoped. Instead of the big twist and Mephisto, we got a skybeam and a showdown between a heroine and a villain whose powers hardly differed. What is it with superhero films and these skybeams? It's not just Marvel, DC is too. Just like the battle between the two comic book publishers, the series finale ended up being polarizing. But what even the critics celebrated was that Wanda truly transformed into the Scarlet Witch, complete with a costume inspired by the comics. In general, Scarlet Witch became the new audience favorite.
