Our journey begins here: 1998
This year, Disney fans will meet Fa Mulan for the first time in the animated film adaptation - do you remember? We accompanied her to the matchmaker, who not even a lot of cricket luck could be convinced to be her new boyfriend. When she slipped into the role of soldier Ping to protect her father from certain death in the war, we were worried. We laughed at the "impressive" appearance of Mushu, the almost-large stone dragon - a porous pocket-sized savior and definitely not a lizard. In the army camp, everyone (really everyone - admit it!) belted out "Be a maaaaann!" at the top of their lungs. And after her training and her march against Shan Yu, the leader of the Huns, it was clear: This fighter who stands by who she really is - even under the greatest threat - is a character who will stay with us for a long time.
2004: a short stopover
We see Mulan again in 2004, when she and her fiancé, Li Shang, who has been promoted to general, accompany three princesses, who would much rather be like other girls, on their dangerous journey. Together with her comrades Yao, Ling and Chien-Po, it is her job to protect them from all dangers. In this sequel to the animated film, we learn "lesson number one" in a particularly diverse way: one is never enough - it always has to be two.
2020: the warrior
In 2020, we meet a completely new Mulan - who is actually a version of the "old" Mulan . Based on the original legend of a woman from the 5th century who took her father's place in the war, the 2020 version does without crickets, lizard dragons and songs - even without Li Shang. Hua Mulan , her real name, is even more combative in this live-action film from Disney. Martial arts moves and impressive imagery paint us a new picture of our heroine. One that almost makes us forget the "flowery" version of herself ( Mulan is called magnolia, but you already knew that, right?).
Well, are you back into it now? Do you remember the first time you encountered all these facets of your favorite character? How you laughed and cheered along? How you first became friends with the not-so-Disney-like version? It would be nothing short of a miracle if a single shop could offer such a diverse range of merchandise - right? Or?!
