The Last of Us merchandise
Hardly any other developer has managed to deliver such outstanding quality over decades as Naughty Dog. The Last of Us Parts 1 and 2 as well as the Uncharted series about treasure hunter Nathan Drake immediately became cult games and have now sold over 40 million copies. But Naughty Dog already enjoyed great success in the 90s with the Crash Bandicoot series, so that the studio eventually became the exclusive partner of Sony and PlayStation.
The action adventure The Last of Us managed something that many games before it had failed to do. It combined a gripping, perfectly staged story with complex and interesting characters and permeated it with survival horror, which scored points thanks to the high-quality gameplay. In 12-16 hours we experience a tour de force through a post-apocalyptic world conquered by zombies, which sometimes makes us laugh and sometimes makes us cry. Seldom have the protagonists of a game grown so close to our hearts, and you too were sure to be rooting for Joel and Ellie.
In 3rd person view, we move through a linear game world, but the level sections are so large and extensive that it almost feels like an open world. The cutscenes are consistently presented in a cinematic manner and the flow of the game (professionally known as pacing) remains consistently at a level that keeps us interested throughout the entire game.
Thanks to the two DLCs that appeared after the release of the main game, we were able to delve even deeper into America in 2033 and compete with other players on a variety of multiplayer maps. Even though the main focus of the single player was on the story, the whole game scored points with flawless and satisfying shooter mechanics. In the Left Behind expansion, we were finally given Elli's backstory and found out what she had to experience and go through before she came to Joel.
The game was originally released in 2013 for the PlayStation 3 and got the most out of the console's graphics power. Landscapes and facial animations have never looked so beautiful. A year later, the HD version was released for the PS 4 with higher resolution textures and 60 frames per second. Even today, the visuals of The Last of Us can keep up with current titles and showed what the young PS 4 was capable of.
Seven years after the first release, Naughty Dog finally released the long-awaited second part, which takes place four years after the events of the predecessor and mainly follows Ellie and her friend Abby. As with the first part, the game received dream ratings in the gaming press and fans and newcomers alike were delighted by the dense plot and the even better shooter mechanics. There was a lot of discussion surrounding the release and ultimately the game was banned in the Middle East when it turned out that it was essentially a love story between two women. But that couldn't stop the success. In the first week after release, The Last of Us Part II set a sales record with over four million copies sold, even surpassing the figures for the Uncharted series.
As in the first part, the actors' performances were captured using motion capture. This is why the movements and animations of the protagonists look so realistic and authentic. In addition, the film was able to recruit well-known and successful actors such as Ashley Johnson as Elli, Laura Bailey as Abby and Troy Baker as Joel. With costs of around 100 million dollars each, the production of a The Last of Us game is in the same league as Marvel films or other Hollywood blockbusters and has no need to hide from them in terms of story, bombast and character development.
The music for both games comes from Latin American Gustavo Santaolalla and contributes significantly to the mood of the game and the emotional rollercoaster that you experience while playing. The Oscar winner has already composed the music for Hollywood films such as Babel, Brokeback Mountain and Collateral and is considered one of the best musicians when it comes to emotion and suspense.

A third part of The Last of Us series has not been officially announced, but creative director Neil Druckmann has already hinted that the rough story for a sequel already exists. So we can hope to experience further adventures with Ellie this decade. There is also the HBO series, in which Chernobyl director Johan Renck is responsible for the production and Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin is writing the script.
Until the series airs and while you wait for the third part of the game series, you can stock up on The Last of Us merchandise or take a look at the graphic novels that Dark Horse Comics produced in 2013 to mark the first part and are called The Last of Us: American Dreams. Like the games, they were written by Neil Druckmann.
Since 2007, Naughty Dog has released great content at least every two years with Uncharted and The Last of Us . No matter what their next project is, we can be sure that it will be worth the wait and that it will keep us glued to the screen for several hours of fun. Like a Steven Spielberg film, the American development studio stands for exciting stories with lovable characters at an extremely high production level. This makes The Last of Us, along with Uncharted, one of the big blockbusters in gaming that you can play again and again and have a good time with each playthrough.
