1977 was a year that changed the film world forever. With his film "Star Wars: A New Hope," George Lucas set new standards and proved many critics wrong. Hardly anyone believed in the film's success; only George Lucas remained undeterred in his vision of bringing his dream to the big screen. On behalf of all nerds, geeks, film buffs, and indeed all people, thank you to George Lucas. Star Wars became a sensation, and the rest is history that we all know. Fortunately, before the release, Lucas had secured the merchandising rights to the franchise, as these were in higher demand than any fan items had ever been before. George Lucas became a millionaire and now worked with his own studio, Lucasfilm, on the highly anticipated sequels. "A New Hope" was followed in 1980 by what is arguably still the most popular film in the series, "The Empire Strikes Back," and the trilogy found its legendary conclusion in "Return of the Jedi" in 1983.
The public's enthusiasm lasted for years; everyone loved Star Wars, and it rose to become the most popular and arguably the most famous film franchise in the world. The hype was even greater when the first trailer for "Episode I – The Phantom Menace" was shown in 1999. Those of us a bit older will remember seeing Darth Maul's silhouette for the first time and witnessing the double-bladed lightsaber: pure excitement. The prequels were meant to bring us closer to the story behind the most famous plot twist in film history: the past of Darth Vader as Luke's father, Anakin Skywalker. We all wanted to know how it could happen that a Jedi could turn into this diabolical, powerful machine. When Anakin was introduced in Episode 1, there wasn't much of this darkness to be seen yet, but by Episode 2, "Attack of the Clones," things became clear to us fans, and we could observe both Anakin's transformation and that of the entire Republic: the final showdown was approaching. With Episode 3 in 2005 came the film we had been longing for most. In 140 minutes of pure action and drama, we saw what many fans had waited 28 years for: the rise of Darth Vader and the Empire. And then, for a while, it went quiet around Star Wars, and it seemed as if George Lucas had told it all.
Then, in 2012, came the bombshell! George Lucas sold his baby to Disney for 3.7 billion dollars. We fans were divided; some were happy that Disney wanted to continue the franchise, while others had a "bad feeling about this," and that sentiment lasted for quite some time. First, they canceled the fan-favorite series "The Clone Wars," then they declared the entire Expanded Universe, consisting of books, comics, and games, to be no longer "canonical," and finally, they split the fan community with Episode 7, "The Force Awakens." Should one love or hate the new Star Wars? There felt like there were only these two extremes, and the film "Episode 8 – The Last Jedi" didn't really help, as it divided us fans into even more camps. Episode 9, "The Rise of Skywalker," became the crowning tragedy, which was also reflected in the earnings. With "only" about 1 billion dollars, the film generated only half the revenue that Episode 7 had produced in 2015. Many of us fans had had enough. But Disney, too, seemed to realize...
Now, Star Wars is back, and more than ever. With series like "The Mandalorian" or the final season 7 of the "Clone Wars" series, Disney is winning the fans back and uniting us again in our shared love for characters like Han Solo, Luke, or Rey. Because Star Wars is not just a film or a series that you like or don't like: Star Wars is a feeling we all know, one that goes beyond a film and can bring us as much joy, inspiration, or comfort as no other franchise can.
