Among the vast number of pirates, there was one who is said to have achieved everything: Gold Roger! 20 years before the story began, the man who had been awarded the title "Pirate King" by the world was executed. Shortly before his public execution, he told everyone present that he had hidden his treasure somewhere in the world. And whoever wants it should go and search for it. People gave this treasure the name "One Piece".

It was the year 1997 when the Japanese manga artist "Eiichirō Oda" launched his now world-famous manga series One Piece. Since the beginning of its publication, the manga has been released weekly in the Japanese manga magazine "Shōnen Jump" by the Japanese publisher "Shueisha".

To this day, One Piece is the most successful manga in the world. And with a lifespan of now over 24 years, it is definitely one of the longest as well - especially since, according to Oda, it is expected to continue for at least a few more years (as of July 2021). By now, over 1,000 chapters have been published in nearly 100 volumes of the series. More than 460 million copies have been shipped worldwide (390 million of those in Japan alone).

One could almost speak of a Japanese tradition when an anime series is created from a (successful) manga. And that is exactly what happened in the case of One Piece. One year after the manga saw the light of day, the anime aired on Japanese television for the first time in 1998. Since the target audience for anime is significantly larger than that for manga comics worldwide, the television series has contributed significantly to the popularity of the manga around the globe. One Piece is produced by the Japanese studio "Toei Animation" and is one of the most successful anime series in the world - and with now over 900 episodes (as of July 2021), also one of the longest. And as long as Eiichirō Oda does not stop working on his manga, the anime series will continue to enjoy popularity worldwide.

The story of One Piece begins with a brief flashback. 20 years ago, Gold Roger, the King of the Pirates, was executed. The words he sent out into the world shortly before his death were the starting signal for a great pirate era. Numerous pirates from all over the world have since set sail for the most dangerous seafaring route of all - the so-called "Grand Line". Legend has it that the Pirate King hid his treasure somewhere on this route. Whoever finds this treasure, it is said, will become the new King of the Pirates!

The protagonist of One Piece is the (initially) 17-year-old Monkey D. Luffy. He is a friendly, fun-loving boy. His big dream is to find the greatest treasure in the world in order to become the new Pirate King. At the beginning of the series, he sets sail to put together a crew for his journey to the Grand Line. In the course of the story, he finds other comrades who join his pirate crew. It bears the name "Straw Hat Pirates" because of Luffy's straw hat, which he practically wears on his head or carries with him at all times. He received this ten years before the start of his journey from his friend and role model, Shanks the Red-Haired.

Over time, the Straw Hat crew gains one capable comrade after another. The first member Luffy is able to recruit for his crew is the "Pirate Hunter" Roronoa Zoro - a swordsman. Originally a bounty hunter who fights using the "Three Sword Style". His big goal is to become the best swordsman in the world. Next, "Nami" joins the pirate crew as their navigator and cartographer. Shortly thereafter, the crew grows to include the marksman "Usopp" and the ship's cook "Sanji," whose great dream is to find a legendary sea called the "All Blue."

With this crew, Luffy reaches the notorious seafaring route where Gold Roger is said to have hidden his treasure - the Grand Line - quite early in the story of One Piece. In principle, one could say that this is where the real adventure truly begins. Because there, not only are a whole lot of adventures and breathtaking experiences waiting for the Straw Hat crew, but possibly also one or two additional crew members to complete the pirate band.

All members of Luffy's crew have one thing in common - each of them had a pivotal experience in his or her past. At the beginning of the story, the 7-year-old Luffy is threatened by a bandit who had previously tangled with Luffy's adult pirate friend, Shanks the Red-Haired. At sea, this bandit throws the boy into the water to let him drown, since Luffy cannot swim. Shortly thereafter, he is attacked by a sea monster, only to be saved in time by Shanks. During this rescue mission, however, Shanks loses his right arm. He had sacrificed it to save young Luffy's life. Just before Shanks and his crew leave Luffy's home village, the pirate leaves his straw hat to his young friend. It had always meant a lot to Shanks. Thereupon, Luffy and Shanks made a promise that Luffy would return the straw hat to him one day, once he had become a great pirate.
