Richard Garfield sparked a revolution in the card game market in 1993: he released his creation, Magic: The Gathering. Whether you are a strategist or a passionate collector, the game (also known by the abbreviation MTG) is considered the origin of the modern trading card game, inspiring many other famous successors. Even more than 25 years after its initial release, Wizards of the Coast continues to present new editions of this strategic evergreen several times a year.

The former mathematics student began developing trading card games as early as the 80s, but it was Magic: The Gathering that finally brought him his major breakthrough. The release of the trading card game is closely linked to the US company Wizards of the Coast. Today, the world-famous role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) is also published under the Wizards of the Coast name.

Whether creatures, lands, artifacts, or enchantments – gamers of Magic: The Gathering can play a wide variety of card types to their advantage over the course of a match. Over the years, five different colors have become established: white, black, red, blue, and green. Each color represents its own playstyle, and colors can also be combined in a deck for more complex synergies. It is no surprise, then, that multi-colored decks have also become popular, whether in double combinations like Simic, Izzet, Golgari, Dimir, or Orzhov, or three-color combinations like Sultai, Jeskai, or Esper.

Each color has its own theme and its own strengths. Blue is the color of water and air, standing for powerful instant spells and control. White represents light, order, and peace – and possesses strong protective spells and enchantments. Green is the color of nature and life – it relies on strong creatures. Death and sacrifice belong to the color black, which can interact with the graveyard and sacrifice creatures for gameplay advantages. And red is the color of chaos, fire, and fury; players of this color benefit from powerful offensive spells and fast creatures with haste.

New cards for the Magic: The Gathering series are provided by the editions released several times a year, which have been available internationally since 1993. In addition to main sets like Alpha, Beta, Unlimited, or the 5th or 10th (and comparable) editions, Magic: The Gathering offers fans and geeks expansions with a special thematic focus every year. In 2021, for example, there were special sets like Kaldheim or Strixhaven: School of Mages. While the former focused on Nordic flair and new snow lands with corresponding card functions, Strixhaven was considered a set with many spells – entirely in the spirit of the magical school. Besides the famous 15-card boosters, theme decks, starter decks, or event decks were sometimes also offered. Today, the Magic: The Gathering portfolio encompasses a total of over 20,000 different cards released over the years. A true paradise for card collectors.

As the editions have progressed, a complex narrative has developed; Magic: The Gathering now consists of rich fantasy lore, also expanded through video games, books, and more. According to Richard Garfield, the card game takes place in a multiverse traveled by so-called Planeswalkers. Each edition adds its own narrative facets to what is now a complex storytelling universe. Sometimes there are even borrowings from famous narrative sources; for instance, the Arabian Nights edition is inspired by the famous stories from One Thousand and One Nights.

A highlight alongside the gameplay—and nerds, gamers, and fans of the series know this best—is the stylish artwork and flavor text of Magic cards. While the text below the cards vividly brings the lore of MTG to life, the paintings and drawings on each card ensure an unforgettable visual presentation of the fantasy world. Recognized artists in the scene have illustrated Magic cards, whether Christopher Rush, Johannes Voss, or Seb McKinnon.

Over the decades, Magic: The Gathering has grown into more than just a card game. Rare cards have now developed such value that they represent an investment for some collectors. The so-called Power Nine from the early editions are famous and considered the most valuable cards. These include the Black Lotus, the five Mox cards, Time Walk, Ancestral Recall, and Timetwister. In 2021, an Alpha version of the Black Lotus was auctioned for an incredible 511,100 dollars. Some Magic: The Gathering fans view this form of profiteering critically—for them, it is about the game, the cards, and the captivating designs. Those who do not find the financial aspect interesting can obtain new valuable cards in other ways: as with many trading card games, Magic cards are also a popular item to trade among friends and acquaintances.

Magic: The Gathering has also transcended its function as a card game because there are now notable releases in other media. These include video games from the gaming world, such as the now-popular Magic Arena, which transports the card game and its mechanics into the virtual space. Players can buy virtual boosters and put together a deck for various formats online. After games like Magic Duels: Origins, Magic 2014, or Duels of the Planeswalkers, Arena is considered one of the most successful adaptations of the virtual card game.

Novels by authors like J. Robert King, Scott McGough, or Cory J. Herndon have also been released for the various story cycles of Magic: The Gathering. With the published books, passionate MTG fans can now fill entire bookshelves. Comics related to the lore of Magic: The Gathering have also been produced. In these, various facets of the multiverse are explored narratively and visually. In fact, there were once plans to dedicate a feature film to the complex fantasy world of Magic: The Gathering, but the production failed. Rumors about a Magic: The Gathering series continue to circulate, however.
