In the independent Living Forest Duel, two players take on the roles of the nature spirits Summer and Winter and compete. On their turn, they always carry out one of two options: reveal the top animal from the shared draw pile or use their own action marker to carry out an action and thus activate the elements on the animal cards. The players can activate both the cards from their personal animal row and those from the shared animal row. During their turn, they can then attract other animals from the shared supply row, put out fires, plant trees or move Onibi towards the opposing spirit.

Over the course of the game, a tactical tug-of-war develops over the achievement of the four victory conditions and dominance in the mystical forest. Living Forest Duel takes up the well-known game mechanisms of the Kennerspiel des Jahres 2022, but modifies them for the game with two people and adds new components and game elements.
