Collection: The Witcher

The Witcher fan articles

In 2007, CD Projekt Red set out to prove that good role-playing games don't necessarily have to come from the USA or Japan. With The Witcher , they brought the captivating novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski about the witcher Geralt of Rivia to digital life. The action role-playing game quickly became a critics' and fans' favorite and impressed with good graphics, a deep story and complex RPG elements. This marked the start of one of the most successful (and most popular) game series ever.

Four years later, the developer studio released a worthy second part, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, which was to surpass the previous game in every way. Visually, The Witcher 2 was one of the most beautiful games of 2011 and narratively it required us to make some difficult decisions and presented us with some unexpected story twists. To this day, Assassins of Kings is considered an atmospheric masterpiece and is repeatedly quoted and praised by fans.

CD Projekt Red's big breakthrough came with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in 2015. Over the next few years, this game topped all the best lists and was named role-playing game of the year several times in a row, as well as the most played RPG of all time. While the predecessors were still quite linear and offered a rather tube-like level structure, the third part now relied on an open game world that could be freely explored and invited people to discover and linger.

Whether you wanted to play a round of Qwint with the traders or go monster hunting, whether you wanted to master treasure hunts or complete side quests: In The Witcher 3, there was as much to do aside from the brilliant main story as in a Bethesda role-playing game.

If you played the first two Witcher games in the standard version, you might have noticed the new voice of Geralt in the third part. Instead of Herbert Schäfer, known as Commander Shepard from Mass Effect, the main role was now given to Oliver Siebeck, who with his deep voice is closer to the original and who dubs personalities such as Mark Strong, Ray Stevenson and Barack Obama in German. He was also hired for the Enhanced Edition of Witcher 1 and 2, so that the trilogy has a uniform acoustic sound. But that's just a fun fact. And while we're on the subject of fun facts: did you know that Witcher creator Andrzej Sapkowski can't do anything with the games and now even regrets having sold the license for them? All we can say to that is: luckily he sold them anyway! Or could you imagine a world without the game trilogy? We can't.

With the DLCs "Hearts of Stone" and "Blood and Wine", which could have been separate games, CD Projekt Red turned the third part into an absolute content monster. The quests were consistently of extremely high quality and the Toussaint wine landscape set visual standards. Overall, the Witcher epic was brought to a worthy end and even after more than half a decade since its release, you can play through the main game and add-ons again and again, discover new facets, choose different dialogue options and experience different story paths. And if you liked the card game Gwent so much that you collected all the cards in the world and defeated every opponent, there is also Gwent, the consistent further development as a standalone game.

Speaking of standalone games: In 2018, CD Projekt Red gave us Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales, a mixture of RPG and collectible card game with an emotional story that was told through complex, stylish images and a surprising story arc. The 2D look is not to everyone's taste and the game, programmed with the Unity Engine, cannot keep up with the main parts in terms of scope. But for a real fan, it is still a must-play with its 20-30 hours of gameplay. After all, it shines with the typical Witcher strengths: the decisions you make affect the course of the game, the story is deep and gripping, and the whole gaming experience feels well-rounded and unconventional in a positive way.

At the end of 2019, Netflix finally created a cinematic monument to the Witcher saga and delighted us with a live action series with the muscle-bound gaming nerd Henry Cavill in the lead role as Geralt of Rivia. Unlike the games, the backstory to the novels is told here. Basically what we already know from Sapkowski's two short story volumes, "The Last Wish" and "The Sword of Destiny". And no better actor could have been found for the Witcher. Cavill combines the look of a Hollywood daredevil with the nerdiness of a true gamer like no other. The YouTube video in which he built himself a high-end PC or the anecdote about how he almost missed the casting for his role as Superman because he was playing World of Warcraft is unforgettable.
