Star Trek Merchandise
Back in 1966, visionary Gene Roddenberry gifted us Star Trek, a franchise that inspired a rush to physics and philosophy departments years before The Big Bang Theory. The space epic quickly gained a loyal and dedicated fan base and is still considered the pinnacle of quality science fiction today.
Historical Significance
Star Trek was a pioneer and trailblazer in many areas. For instance, Nyota Uhura was the first woman of color to play a lead role in a mainstream series, and the kiss shared between her and Captain Kirk was the first in film history between a white man and a woman of color. This open-minded and tolerant approach is also why Hollywood star Whoopi Goldberg appeared in the series TNG and the first feature film starring Jean-Luc Picard without requesting a fee.
Technical Visions
Star Trek has also technically shaped both our visions of the future and the present. As early as the 80s, people on the NCC-1701D were communicating with tablets, having fun in virtual reality rooms (a.k.a. the holodeck), and exploring the existence of wormholes. At the time, critics dismissed all these things as figments of the imagination. Today, tablets and VR arcades are an integral part of the entertainment industry, and wormholes are the subject of many scientific studies.
Science & Star Trek
Hardly any other franchise understands how to combine science and fiction as masterfully as Star Trek. Even respected researchers dedicate themselves to the physical theories underlying the stories. For example, the German science entertainer Prof. Harald Lesch discusses the realism of warp drive, photon torpedoes, or beaming in some of his shows, and even one of the co-founders of string theory, Prof. Michio Kaku, dedicated one of his books to the technology of Star Trek, exploring what might one day become reality and what remains in the realm of fiction.

The Crews
Every crew in the Star Trek universe had their own unmistakable heroes who shaped whole generations and continue to do so today. From the 60s to the early 90s, we experienced the beginnings of the franchise with Captain James T. Kirk, Doctor McCoy, Spock, and "Beam me up" Scotty. It continued in TNG with Picard, LaForge, Riker, Data, and Worf, who sparked the huge hype around Star Trek in the 90s and to whom we owe the series Voyager and Deep Space Nine. Speaking of Voyager: long smiled upon by fans, the series is now considered a real insider tip among the Star Trek series. Nevertheless, Commander—or Captain—Benjamin Sisko remains arguably the most multifaceted commander in the series universe.
But ENT also introduced fascinating characters with the Vulcan T’Pol, Captain Jonathan Archer, and tactical officer Lt. Malcolm Reed. With Discovery, J.J. Abrams then presented us with a completely new direction. More action and a different design have ensured that new, young people joined the Star Trek universe and became fans as well. But old hands are now finally getting new material with the TNG successor Picard and get to see the Earl Grey-drinking Sir Patrick Stewart in action once again.
